 Next Friday 3rd November 2017, 10:30 AM, at the Auditorium of the Industrial School (E.T.S.I.I.T.) of the University of Cantabria, student Marta Revilla Salas will defend the PhD Thesis entitled “Analysis and modelling of a BAS (Biofilm Activated Sludge) process for the biological treatment of high organic load wastewaters with nutrient limited”.

The Thesis has been supervised by Dra. Berta Galan Corta and Prof. Dr. Javier R. Viguri Fuente form the GER Research Group. The Thesis with Industrial Mention, will be presented to the Professor Ana Elias from the Bilbao Engineering School, UPV/EHU, the Dr. Fernando Cortabitarte from Acciona Agua Company and the Associate Professor Gema Ruiz Gutierrez from QuIPRe Department, UC.

The thesis of Marta Revilla proposes new integrated models of MBBR and BAS processes for industrial waste water with high organic load and nutrient deficiency, incorporating depredation and hydrolysis mechanisms. It also proposes decision-making tools and their application to obtain criteria for optimal and sustainable operation of WWTP.

Alberto Coz, del grupo GER, ha participado en el espectáculo divulgativo ¿En tu ciencia o en la mía?. En pleno siglo XXI, en el que los avances de la ciencia y la tecnología han moldeado nuestras vidas hasta extremos que nuestros abuelos ni soñaron, cuatro científicos españoles han reivindicado el protagonismo de su área de investigación en este progreso. Fueron dispuestos a todo pero sólo pudo quedar uno. El evento ha tenido lugar el día 10 de febrero a las 19:00h en el Ateneo de Santander y ha sido organizado por el departamento MATESCO de la Universidad de Cantabria y el Instituto de Física de Cantabria (IFCA). Los cuatro participantes han sido: (i) Clara Grima, doctora en matemáticas y catedrática (CEU) del departamento de matemática aplicada I de la Universidad de Sevilla; (ii) Diego Herranz, profesor de la UC, director del departamento de física moderna y miembro del IFCA; (iii) Jónatan Piedra, Ramón y Cajal de la UC e investigador del IFCA; y (iv) Alberto Coz, del departamento de química e ingeniería de procesos y recursos de la Universidad de Cantabria.

Last November 22, Maria del Camino Martín defended her Doctoral Thesis entitled: "Leakage effects of CO2 stored in marine geological formations: kinetic mobility of trace elements from marine sediments", supervised by Dr. Javier R. Viguri from the GER research group at the UC. The evaluation committee was Dra.Inmaculada Riba from University of Cádiz and Dr. Philippe Gombert from INERIS, Verneuil-en-Halatte, France, and chaired by Dra. Ana Andrés Payán from the University of Cantabria (GER group). The Ph.D. has been made in the Chemistry and Process & Resource Engineering Department and has been supported by the financial help of the Project CTM 2011-28437-C02-01. Camino Martín was funded by means of an F.P.I. fellowship No. BES-2012-053816. In addition, Camino Martin completed her academic activities with a research stay at NTU in Trondheim, Norway. In addition to the defense, Philippe Gombert from the Ground and Underground Division/Water and Gas Department of the French National Institute for Environment and Risks- INERIS (Verneuil-en-Halatte, FRANCE), presented the conference “THE FRENCH NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR RISK ASSESSMENT AND ITS ROLE IN CCS RESEARCH”. The collaboration between INERIS and the GER research group started in 2015 focused in the CCS risk assesment.

Next Tuesday 22nd November 2016, 10:30 AM, at the Auditorium of the Industrial School (E.T.S.I.I.T.) of the University of Cantabria, Camino Martin Torre will defend the PhD Thesis entitled: “Leakage effects of CO2 stored in marine geological formations: kinetic mobility of trace elements from marine sediments”. The Thesis has been supervised by Prof. Dr. Javier R. Viguri Fuente form the GER Research Group. The PhD Thesis has been supported by the financial help of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, Project CTM 2011-28437-C02-01, ERDF included. M.C. Martín-Torre was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation by means of an F.P.I. fellowship No. BES-2012-053816. The Thesis with International Mention, will be presented to the Professor Philippe Gombert from INERIS, Verneuil-en-Halatte, France, the Associate Professor Inmaculada Riba from University of Cádiz and the Associate Professor Ana Andres Payán from QuIPRe Department, UC.
