Three new papers have been published by the GER group in the environmental risk assessments and circular economy subjects:

The paper in the journal Environmental Science and Technology, in collaboration with the ICMAN-CSIC (Instituto de Ciencias Marinas de Andalucía), studied how sunscreens release trace metals and nutrients into Mediterranean seawater under both light and dark conditions. The laboratory experimental data have been used to develop a model that predicts the release of compounds. Authors use this model to estimate that on a typical summer day at the beach, beachgoers could increase the concentration of alumina in coastal waters by 4% and of titanium of almost 20%. These compounds can cause dramatic changes in the seawater and could impact tourism, recreation which drive coastal economies around the world. The work published in Journal of the Cleaner Production takes a step towards bridging the gap in the literature in relation to the real performance of Construction and Demolition wastes (CDW) management. The paper reports a simplified methodology that allows the quantification of the combined influence of the segregation and heterogeneity of the inlet CDW stream with the technological level of the recycling facilities on the quantity and composition of aggregated product streams. The analysis of the results will facilitate the classification of the actual management strategy and prediction of improved future options. The applicability of the proposed methodology is illustrated using real data obtained from a case study of CDW management at the Regional level, in Cantabria (Northern Spain).

The last paper published in the Journal of Material Cycles and Waste Management describe the effect of the trial scale (from laboratory scale to industrial trials) on the technological and environmental properties of ceramic construction materials developed using different proportions of Waelz Slags.Results from the laboratory and industrial trials were compared to evaluate the scale effect on the ceramic properties. The introduction of WS in clay bricks seems to be easily scaled-up for additions of WS ≤ 10wt%, but higher percentages of WS promotes relevant differences in the properties of the laboratory and industrial bricks.
